The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) reported that Indonesia had 132.7 million internet users as of 2016. APJII also ran a survey of social media users in Indonesia, and it found three platforms that Indonesians visit more than any others.

According to the social media user survey, Facebook ranks first as the platform Indonesians visit most. About 71.6 million Indonesians, or 54%, visit Facebook. In second place is Instagram, a platform built mainly for sharing photos and short videos. Respondents put Instagram second, with 19.9 million users, or 15%. Third is YouTube. In APJII's results for Indonesia, the video service YouTube reached 14.5 million users, or 11%, in 2016.

To collect the data for this survey, APJII conducted face-to-face fieldwork and used multi-stage random sampling. It interviewed 2,000 respondents for the social media user survey and 1,200 respondents for the separate survey on internet penetration.

Internet use rises every year and social media platforms keep evolving, so the findings of a social media user survey will keep changing too. As Indonesians shift from television to internet access, APJII also found that people reach social media more often from a PC or personal computer than from a tablet or phone. The survey shows that internet users spend an average of 4 hours 42 minutes a day online on a PC, compared with an average of 3 hours 33 minutes a day on a tablet or phone.
