How to Bathe a Newborn: 5 Tips for Newborn Baby Care
Learn how to bathe a newborn: prepare the supplies, bathe gently, dry the skin folds, apply baby oil and pick a comfortable diaper for newborn care.
One part of newborn care is bathing the baby to keep the baby's body healthy and clean. But sometimes mothers, especially first-time moms, are unsure how to bathe a baby properly. Some are even afraid to bathe their newborn. When that happens, it is natural to feel awkward during the bath, and the baby may not get as clean as possible. Here are tips for bathing a baby as one step of newborn baby care:
Contents
1. Prepare the Baby's Bath Supplies
When you are about to bathe your baby, the first thing to do is get all the bath supplies ready: warm water, a soft towel, baby soap, a diaper and a clean change of clothes.
Make sure that every item you will use for the baby has been proven safe. When choosing bath soap, for example, make sure the baby soap has been clinically tested for safety.
2. Bathe the Baby With Loving Care
In newborn care, bathing the baby is one of the important tasks. Do it with loving care. Treat the baby gently so the baby is not hurt. This helps build a strong bond between the baby and you.
In the first days after birth, you don't have to bathe the baby in a tub. Simply hold the baby on your lap and wipe the whole body with a towel dampened with warm water, so the baby feels comfortable during the bath. When the baby is held on your lap during the bath, the baby can feel the affection a mother gives.
You can start bathing the baby in a tub once the umbilical cord stump has completely fallen off. When bathing the baby in the tub, still do it lovingly and slowly. Bathe the baby in a tub of warm water and wash with baby soap and shampoo. Make sure the folds of the baby's body, such as the arm folds, the neck, behind the ears and the genital area, are free of dirt.
3. Dry the Baby Thoroughly
After the bath, dry the baby right away and thoroughly. Make sure the skin folds on the baby's body, such as the neck, behind the ears, the arm folds and the genital area, are completely dry so they don't stay damp. If you don't dry these areas well, they may stay damp, and fungus and bacteria can multiply there easily.
Use a soft towel to dry the baby so that friction doesn't irritate the baby's skin. Don't use a rough towel, because it can easily injure the baby's sensitive skin.
4. Apply Baby Oil
Before putting clothes on the baby, it is best to apply baby oil to the body first. Baby oil is very useful for softening the baby's skin. Choose a baby oil that contains natural minerals and is also enriched with olive oil and vitamin E. Baby oil like that works well as a moisturizer for the baby's skin.
5. Put On a Comfortable Diaper
The next step in newborn care is putting on a diaper that is safe and comfortable to use. Use a diaper that absorbs the baby's urine well so it doesn't irritate the baby's skin.
